Do you honor and deeply cherish the covenant of marriage that God originally created? (and if you don’t believe me, check your Bibles – the first two chapters of Genesis should suffice). Whether you are married or not, the Bible is clear on this one point: marriage is to be honored by all.
Sadly, we live in a world where the institution of marriage is being denigrated, and this is an unfortunate thing.
Regardless of your marital status or beliefs about the institution, the key takeaway is this: the biblical construct of marriage is meant to be honored and valued by everybody.
Personally, as I grow deeper in my study of the Bible, I have developed a whole new appreciation for the specific roles to which God has called husbands and wives. There is a high degree of spiritual accountability involved in such a relationship (husbands and wives to each other, and then both spouses before the Lord), and the marriage covenant is not to be entered into lightly. Simply put, marriage is a contract, and a binding one at that (with a couple small exceptions, as noted in the Bible).
[And I thank the Lord for not allowing me to marry the man to whom I was engaged several years ago. I bear him no ill will, but he and I were not well-suited to one another (biblically or emotionally) and I believe with all my heart that we both would’ve been terribly unhappy as husband and wife.
My only regret is not holding onto the diamond! 😉 But I digress.]
So yes, I highly value and deeply honor the institution of marriage. What about you?
Dear Lord, You knew what You were doing when You designed the covenant of marriage. The more I learn about it, the more I respect and honor I have for it.
That being said, I believe that marriage is probably one of the most challenging things that people can voluntarily enter into over the course of their lives; it’s not a bad thing, but it’s not easy, either.
Regardless, thank You for creating it. Please remind me to do all that I can to affirm and cherish the marriage covenant – as You have defined it. In Your name I pray, Amen.
