Today, I am grateful for having shelter. I was running an errand earlier, and happened to pass by a homeless man who was surrounded by a shopping cart filled with bric-a-brac, and covered with blankets and towels. Such a sight breaks my heart! I couldn’t help but wonder – what does this man do when the temperatures dip below freezing? What does he do when it rains? Does he have family? Is he alone in the world?
I live in a place where the cost of living is extremely high, and it is only by the grace of God that I am able to afford the apartment that I presently occupy. What a blessing it is to be able to come home and have a place to lay my head! What a privilege it is to be able to sleep in a bed – my own bed – and not have to worry about where I will rest the next night. And even though I’m not exactly rolling in money, what a privilege it is to be able to pay my rent each month. These are things that we often take for granted, no?
While my apartment may be humble and I’m not exactly Martha Stewart when it comes to decorating, I can say that where I live is home. It’s familiar, and it’s mine. To be able to have a home – even if it’s one that I do not own – is truly one of God’s greatest blessings to me.
So here is my prayer for today: Dear Lord, thank You for giving me a home. Thank You for always looking after me, as I have never been homeless or destitute. Thank You for faithfully giving me reliable and safe shelter, and a place to lay my head each night. May I never take these things for granted now or in the future. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.
