Daily Bread

Today, I’m most grateful for God’s abundant provision of food and water in my life – daily necessities that I thoughtlessly take for granted most of the time.

I was listening to a news podcast earlier in the day, and heard about the horrific food insecurity issues that were taking place in a developing country. Such a harsh reality (not having food to eat and water to drink) seems so far removed to me, as I have ready access to such conveniences like Trader Joe’s – where I purchased my groceries today – the ability to pay for the food that I need, and the luxury to live in a part of the world where the cost of high-quality produce and other food items is quite reasonable.

As the Lord’s Prayer says, “give us this day our daily bread,” and God has proven to be both faithful and consistent in His provision (particularly when you consider that I am a caffeine- and MSG-avoidant, lactose-intolerant vegan). Not only am I able to find the food that I need, but I’m also able to purchase food items that adhere to my dietary and personal preferences.

The main purpose of this blog is for me to intentionally take inventory of the things – big and small – that God faithfully provides, and to do so with gratitude. Being able to eat (and eat well – good, flavorful food) is a really, really big deal.

Here’s my prayer for today: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your incredible generosity as You provide my daily bread so faithfully and consistently. Help me to acknowledge You and see You as the Source of all that I need each day, and to do so with reverential gratitude. Thank You also for ready access to clean and life-sustaining water, so that my body can be nourished and cleansed each day. Thank You for Your never-ceasing thoughtfulness toward me. In Your name I pray, Amen.
